One of the benefits of DIY culture is the increased success of small, independent music companies. More than ever, consumers have a wider variety of equipment options, especially with effects pedals. One of the upstarts getting plenty of positive attention is Devi Ever, a Portland-based distortion pedal company that specializes in fuzz pedals. Recently, I picked up their Aenima pedal to see what all the excitement is about.

As a gearhead with far too many stompboxes than I know what to do with, I find that I appreciate simplicity in pedals more and more. The Aenima certainly delivers on that front. It’s housed in a small, sturdy enclosure (comparable in size and durability to my MXR Phase 90), with only two knobs for volume and texture.

Now, that may not seem like much, but plug your axe into this thing, and you’ll quickly discover that two knobs are all you need.

Devi makes a couple of tamer and more traditional fuzz boxes, but if that’s what you want, stay the hell away from the Aenima. This thing will turn your guitar signal into a weapon of complete sonic destruction. It will melt your face off, send flames scorching out of your earholes, and tear open a whole in the space-time continuum. And that’s just the start of the madness.

When you have the pedal at unity gain (which is literally a hair above 0) and the texture knob down, you can get some relatively light fuzz with a sharp, spitting tonal quality. As you crank the gain and the texture, things start to get more chaotic—and by “chaotic,” I mean a transcendental inferno of noise will swallow your very soul. The Aenima roars, spits, crackles, and screams, sometimes simultaneously.

The only way you can begin to control the wall of noise is by cutting your guitar’s volume pot. Even then you’ll often get a mellow, spacey hum, which is perfect for oscillating with the analog delay pedal of your choice. Your eardrums will certainly appreciate the rest.

It’s not standard, it’s not safe, and it sure as hell ain’t tame, but for all-out wall of sound insanity, I can’t imagine a better pedal than the Aenima. This little guy makes the
Fuzz Factory look like a kid’s toy.
