So Gibson’s slapping a seventh string on the Flying V. To be honest it kinda surprises me that it took them this long to pull it off. I mean, the V came out in the late 50s and became a staple guitar in rock and metal. It’s not like they were the first to pull it off, so the inspiration’s been there.
But then it’s not like Gibson’s huge on making 7-stringers, so there is that. They also often seem apt to stick a bit closely to a core of characteristics that’ve come to define them over the years, and this one is at heart no different.
The guitar is built of mahogany with a rosewood fretboard, but the real tone difference is going to be in the EMG 707 and 81-7 pickups in the neck and bridge respectively.
Other fun facts include the ever returning Tune-o-matic bridge and a set of Steinberger tuners that offer a pretty sleek look to the headstock.
However as I’d just said, Gibson isn’t primarily known for making 7-string guitars, but they have tinkered in that department before. A few years ago they’d made 7-string Explorers and under the Epiphone name some 7-string Les Pauls were made. So while it’s not an expansive history they have tried their luck with it before which has led up to the Flying V’s turn at the wheel.
After all of that I’m a bit surprised that they’d opted to put the seventh string on the Les Paul before the V. I’m guessing the Firebird will see one next if they feel like trying it out once more.
