Guitar Updates From The Past Week

The Zakk Wylde Roast

Zakk Wylde RoastPerhaps a bit overlooked in the slew of the rest of the NAMM updates was a new event that took place. Kicking off at the start of NAMM, Zakk Wylde stepped up to bat as the first victim of Guitar World’s Rock & Roll Roast which is slated to become an annual event.

The roasters included Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne, Scott Ian, Chris Jericho, Jim Norton, Jim Florentine, Brian Posehn, Corey Taylor, and Stone Cold Steve Austin of all people.

While it may have been recorded (at least I imagine it would have been) at the moment there isn’t any available footage and not much content to paint a good picture as to how it went over.

In the meantime we can just sit in silence and imagine people making fun of Zakk to pass the time until something does surface.

AC/DC’s Next Album Is Delayed

Crummy news comes in the form of AC/DC’s upcoming album being delayed on the count that one of the members was sick. I can safely presume that vocalist Brian Johnson isn’t the sick one since he was quoted saying that he couldn’t say anything on the matter. That included citing who has fallen ill and with what.

Angus YoungSince there isn’t any factual information to fill the void of curiosity I’m resorting to plan B. Rumor and hearsay.

I believe what happened was Angus Young took his wife on vacation to an old cabin in the woods where they found creepy, old recordings that unbeknownst to them reawakened these dark spirits that got into Angus’ hand and turned it evil. The only cure? A chainsaw. Since the temporary replacement chainsaw-hand doesn’t work as well when playing guitar he had to take time to have a new hand custom built. True story.

However Van Halen’s Next Album Isn’t Delayed

Quite the contrary, actually. New material from the next Van Halen album A Different Kind of Truth, which is the first album featuring the return of David Lee Roth since the 84, has started poking up in various places on the internet and as of right now we are no different. Out on the prowl are two separate samples of the songs “Blood and Fire” and “Stay Frosty”.

If you happen to find yourself curious about the whole track listing then here it is.

Mark Reale

Mark Reale

Finishing this update is a saddening fact indeed.

Riot guitarist Mark Reale passed away recently on January 25th.  He had founded Riot back in the mid 70s, and save for a brief split-up in the 80s, the band kept pushing forward with tours and albums both in studio and live.

Riot is/was a great band and it sucks that a great guitarist like Reale has passed, especially considering he was only 56, but he did what he loved to the end.

Our deepest condolences go to the family and friends of Mark Reale.
