Kurt Vile – Bottle It In

Kurt Vile

A few years ago – an eternity in the web journalism world – we highlighted several young artists that nobody had really heard of. We thought they were really cool and wanted to share them, and help spread the word. The year was 2011, and we were right about some of them, and really right about Kurt Vile.

Things have changed a lot for him, since the days of self promoting himself in the late 90s, to signing with Matador Records, to his most recent work with Courtney Barnett on their release entitled, “Lotta Sea Lice”. He also had a hit with “Pretty Pimpin” off his 2015 release, “B’lieve I’m Goin Down” – which was Matador Records’ biggest seller to date.

In fact, he has almost released an album a year for the past eight years. This guy has always been prolific, but as he told Rolling Stone, “It just took me until I was 29 for someone to actually put my music out”.

The New Album – Bottle It In

Kurt Vile - Bottle It In - Album ArtKurt’s seventh album is definitely Kurt Vile. He still reminds us of Neil Young sprinkled in with some Dylan moments. Almost every song starts out with that super chill, flowing Kurt Vile vibe that his fans love so much. Most of the songs stay engaging, but there are a few moments where the song loses me. (But then, it’s not hard to lose me)

However, it was especially easy to lose me with the title track (which is 10 minutes long) and kinda just chugs along with very little sense of direction.

But the lead track – I love it. “Loading Zones”  and songs like it (and most of the rest of the album) are typically why I’ll throw Kurt on my spotify. It comes at you as fast as you need it to, but not too fast – and really doesn’t leave you wanting for any more.

The Guitars

They’re pretty much exactly what you’d expect from Kurt, if you know his music. If you don’t I’d describe it as shoe-gaze in some areas, flowing and dreamlike, and very “plucky” in other spots.

“Check Baby” provides a more grainy distorted sound with a bit more groove, while maintaining that “space” that his guitar recordings always seem to have – like you can hear the amp in the room, and that rocks.
