It has been a while since these guys have had a new studio album. In fact, it has been around 6 years since their last studio release. The tentative release date for Gold Cobra is June 28th 2011.
The band started working on the album back in 2009. The single “Shotgun” was released on May 17th, 2011. But let’s talk about the guitar player for the band. Wes Borland. This guy has quite a resume: He has done work with Limp Bizkit, Marilyn Manson, Jonathan Davis, Nine Inch Nails, Filter, and A Perfect Circle to name a few.
He also created the art work for the cover of Gold Cobra and has his own Art Gallery of paintings. The guy is very creative to say the least.
The best way I can describe Wes Borland’s playing is aggressive, hard, industrial, physcodelic rock. I personally used to love to crank up the song “Break Stuff” off of the album “Significant Other” to get that energy boost when I was working out. Wes has some pretty cool crushing rhythms that gives you that rush that resonates through your body.
Wes plays primarily Ibanez 7 string guitars and some PRS. Wes being the creative individual he is does not play in conventional tunings. He gets his unique sound by using the following three tunings:
Tuning #1 : C# F# B E G# C# C#
He tunes the bottom 6-strings like a regular guitar, then the 1st string is tuned to same pitch as the 2nd string, then he tunes the entire guitar down 1 1/2 steps to C#.
Tuning #2 : B F# B E G# C# C#
The same as Tuning #1, except drop the 7th string down 1 step to Low B. This is basically a “Dropped” tuning.
Tuning #3 :
C# F# B E G# C# F#
The same as Tuning #1, except tune the 1st string up to a high F# (a fourth higher)
The tour starts in July going through the US for 7 weeks
